Activities and Initiatives

T HE CENTER'S ACTIVITIES include several active, ongoing major initiatives:

The National Scientific Council on the Developing Child focuses on the analysis, synthesis, and communication of the science of early childhood and early brain development (birth to age 5) in order to inform science-based policymaking. More

The National Forum on Early Childhood Program Evaluation focuses on the analysis, synthesis, and communication of research evidence on program effectiveness (birth to age 5), as well as data on broader health and family support services, in order to inform science-based policymaking and practice. More

A partnership with the National Conference of State Legislatures and the National Governors Association Center for Best Practices focuses on bringing the science of early childhood devel-opment to U.S. policymakers in all 50 states. Current activities include a State Policy Working Group, consisting of prominent policymakers from the executive and legislative branches of 12 states, and a National Symposium on Early Childhood Science and Policy scheduled for June 2008. A partnership with the FrameWorks Institute brings research expertise in communications, grounded in the social sciences, to the task of translating scientific knowledge to inform policies that advance the healthy development of children. More

An interdisciplinary research program provides a forum for faculty seminars and seed funding for innovative studies focused on elucidating the causal mechanisms of disparities in learning, behavior, and health related to significant childhood adversity. Current projects include both animal and human studies investigating the biological markers of early-life stress and their association with lifelong problems in physical and mental health. More

The Tulsa Project provides a collaborative, community-based laboratory for designing, testing, and refining innovative strategies for reducing the cycle of intergenerational poverty through new approaches to intervention in the early childhood years. In partnership with the George Kaiser Family Foundation and the Community Action Project of Tulsa, this initiative brings together a team of distinguished scholars to focus on family economic security, the mental health of children, parents, and service providers, and the integration of health and developmental services for children. A university-wide Colloquium Series offers public lectures and discussion on an integrated science of child health and development and its implications for the fields of education, public health, social policy, law, business, and medicine. More

The Julius B. Richmond Fellowship supports dissertation research for a small, selected group of Harvard University doctoral students annually. More

A planning process to develop a Global Strategy for the Center is currently underway, in collaboration with the AÇEV: Mother Child Education Foundation, based in Istanbul, Turkey, and the Harvard Initiative for Global Health. More
